Alpha 32: Great very vintage knitting pattern from early 1920s for baby boys suits. This lovely pattern has 4 different set all knitted in 3ply wool and to fit 23-24 inch chest. Top and pants so typical of the time, great for re-enactment, TV film and themed weddings. Always work a tension square and change needles to accommodate the wool that you choose.

Angora Bonnets 106: Great vintage baby bonnet knitting pattern from 1920's or earlier. The top one is knitted and the bottom Dutch bonnet is crocheted, but in bunny wool or angora. The yarn used would have been a fine version, so a 3 or 4ply rather than the thicker one more popular today. See internet for suppliers of Angora. Always work a tension square.

Baby bonnet knitting pattern vintage from 1920s

Beryl 458 Bonnet: Great vintage knitting pattern for bonnet from 1910. This is a really early pattern and typical of the time and although looks easy it is rather complicated pattern. A nice challenge for an experienced knitter. Can be worked in a 4ply wool or silk thread the correct thickness. worked on size 11 needles (3mm). An interesting project.

vintage baby vets knitting pattern from 1910 Beryl 565-322 Vests: Great vintage knitting pattern for really early vests probably around 1910 or earlier. They are both knitted in vintage 2ply which would be similar to modern 3ply. They are knitted on size 11 (3mm) and it is suggested for a larger size to change needle size to 10. These can also be knitted in silk. Three needles are required for one on the left and is knitted in a rib, then a wave pattern fro top ans sleeves edges. The one on the right is knitted in garter stitch and is for a tiny baby and is edged in crochet shells or you could pick up stitches and make a picot edge.

baby dress knitting pattern 1920s BD Carole: Great vintage baby dress knitting pattern from around 1920. These little dresses are from a book left to my by my Great Grandmother over 50 years ago. I have knitted several of them over the years and they work out very nicely - ribbons help with some of the plainer ones. Length is sometimes given but not always chest measurement as the style give freedom of sizing. Mostly knitted in vintage 3ply, so try modern 4ply in a tension square. This one is for 16 inch length and 22 inch chest. This is a pretty pattern and easy to knit, great for the toddler.

Edwardian Bonnet-1+2: Great vintage knitting pattern for little bonnet from around 1915.  Knitted in a silk thread on very fine needles - well worth the effort. Try cotton, silk, linen thread of 50count. This one has a simple shell border round brim, but I made it with silk and put an angora trim round the edge, for a Christening. It is knitted on 4 needles size 17 imperial. One on the right, is again knitted in a silk thread on very fine needles. This one has a crochet border round brim, but I made it with silk and put swans-down round the edge. These are both knitted in a 4ply to work out at length from waist to heel of 16.5 inches. On pair had feet the other is gaiter style that would fit over soft shoes. I love these patterns, this one is from my collection of over 500 from this period - they will eventually appear on site!  This little range of fluffy bonnets is so sweet. I have several made in the 30's in my collection of vintage baby clothes - they are so sweet. They can also be made in modern 4ply yarn. Always work a tension square, although there is not a tension measurement given, you can see the sizes and can work out if you need to change needles to get that size. The smaller size is 14 inches round the face unstretched the older style is 15 inches. Make in 3ply for tiny baby sizes

This set is knitted in a wool similar to double knitting, try a tension square. 4ply and smaller needles would make a smaller size. To fit 18-24 months. There are instructions for a bonnet and jacket mostly in garter stitch with rib. I have made this one and as it comes out quite large for modern babies I would recommend the change of wool and needles. I made it in modern 3ply and size 10 (3.25mm) needles and it fitted a 3 month baby nicely.

This little set is knitted in thick wool similar to modern double knitting. It was a type of brushed wool, but modern double knitting will look good - wool can only be brushed up with a teasel brush if it is pure wool - or try modern double knitting Angora in a tension square. Legging with out feet and a cap with long point and pompom. To fit 26 inch chest and knitted in garter stitch, very cosy.

Here we have instructions for petticoat and knickers from early 1920s. The little petti is to fit 12-24 months and measures 16 inches long. Easy to adjust and to knit any spare wool similar to modern 4ply. Always work a tension square. Work in modern 3ply for smaller size. And knitted knickers! Knitted in garter stitch, quick easy and so useful. Round widest part 28 inches. Waistband and leg bands in crochet, but these can be knitted if you do not crochet.

This lovely set is knitted in bunny wool or angora to fit 23 inch chest (loosely over clothes) with little bonnet and bootees. Will fit smaller baby if worked in 4ply angora. With garter stitch border and stocking stitch nice and easy to knit.

As Pammy and Paulie are twins this little set is ideal for them both. This super set could be for boy or girl and consists of coat, pull-ups, hat and jumper knitted in 4ply and in simple garter stitch. 20-22 inch chest, great for new baby. In the days that this was made baby wore a lot more under garments than they do now. Edging is in crochet shell stitch. Knitting in baby 3ply will make this set suitable for birth to 6 months. I think it would look good with an angora or pleated silk ribbon edging, both of which were popular at the time.

This little outfit was known as a 'puck suit' and there are instruction for a cap and a bonnet to match so it is suitable for baby girl or baby boy. Pammy and Paulie are twins, so they could have one each! There is also the instructions for this shawl. Knitted in wool that should knit similar tension as modern 4ply, work a tension square and adjust needles if needed - for a smaller size work in modern 3ply. Chest 18-20 inches.

This pattern is from the period just after the First World War and is knitted in a simple, but pretty pattern with interesting bodice design. Worked in vintage 3ply, so try modern 4ply as tension suggests this is a better ply. Always work a tension square. The yarn originally used for this little dress was a silk blend. To fit up to a 21 inch chest and is 15 inches to hem.

vintage baby shawl and layette knitting pattern 1930s

Patons 6/497: Fabulous baby layette vintage knitting 1920s. This beautiful pattern has long and short dress, matinee coat, slippers, mittens and bonnet for little girl, jumper, pants, bootees, mittens and pull on hat for little boy, plus there are instructions for the shawl. There are also instructions for under bodice and body belt, long sleeve vest, short sleeve vest, petticoat and tummy band  and two different types of knickers, and a small head shawl of 26 inches square. All items are shown below separately. This is from a much earlier pattern published by Patons before the 1st world war. The shawl measures 54 inches square and the pattern is available separately. The chest measurements are 18 inches matinee coat,  dress chest 16 inches,  bodice 14 and 16 inches round chest, vests 16 inches and prem baby size for 14 inches. Wonderfully small sizes for todays newborn from this lovely vintage pattern. Worked in vintage 2ply (modern 3ply) and vintage 3ply (modern 4ply). Be sure to work tension square as some of these garments are worked on larger needles than you would think. See below for illustrations of items in this pattern.

Pearsall's 353: Great vintage 1920s knitting pattern for baby dress. There are instructions for dress to fit 17 inch chest. The original yarn was a pure silk and wool blend, you can still by this type of yarn, but this was probably in a vintage 2ply, so try modern 3ply in a tension square, front and back are worked the same. the vest is to fit 16 inch chest. Can be knitted in pure silk, if you do this read the instructions on the back page for knitting with pure silk as this still holds true even for modern silk yarn. I will try knitting the vest in modern 3ply pure wool and see what size it come out - just need a bit of time!

PS3-211: Outdoor set: Great traditional vintage knitting pattern from 1920s. Knitted all in garter stitch, so easy to make this retro set. Double breasted for little boy with cap, and single breasted of centre with tie waist and bonnet for little girl. Both sets have the open foot leggings and mittens, with or without thumbs. Unusually both coats have raglan sleeves.  Shown on children about 18 moths old and around 21 inch chest. Wool used was similar to modern double knitting, then referred to as 4ply. Always work a tension square.

To fit 24-25 inch chest. Keep in mind at this time babies wore a lot of under clothes. This would have been for a 6-12 month baby.
