vintage carry coats knitting pattern from 1940s

Bairnswear 130 Carry Coats: Great vintage baby knitting pattern for two carry coat sets from 1930-1940. These very useful long coats with hoods keep baby warm, especially if having a christening at a chillier time of year. There is a lacy design which has a bonnet and a cute little collar with embroidery on the yoke. These are more useful than a shawl, warm and comfy. About 25 inches in length.

Bairnswear 141: Great vintage baby cloak and cape knitting pattern from 1930s. This super pattern has three different capes with bonnets that can be attached or worn separately. The cape shown on the baby is 34 inches long knitted in vintage 2ply or modern 3ply. The one in centre on the side panel is a hooded cape and is 23 inches long and knitted in vintage 3ply, so may well knit up better in modern 4ply. The top one is a simple to knit one in vintage 3ply again and is 24 inches long. Always work a tension square.

This cloak is knitted in baby wool and is a great alternative to a shawl with a pretty shell stitch panel design. 21 inches from neck to hem, crochet tie with bobbles at neck.

I have knitted this set in modern 3ply and it fits a new born and is absolutely beautiful. If worked to correct tension in vintage 3ply or modern 4ply will fit 20 inch chest, for smaller size us modern 3ply.

This little cape has instructions bonnet attached, but bonnet is actually knitted separately then sewn to cape. This pattern matches the one above and includes bootees and mittens. Cape measures 19 inches long. Worked in vintage 3ply, if knitted in modern 3ply the set will be a bit smaller if knitted in modern 4ply with a size smaller needles it should be the size stated.

This pretty cape is knitted in baby 3ply but modern 4ply can be used, always work a tension square and adjust needles if necessary. This lovely design has moss borders with picot edging. 21 inches long, can be made longer or shorter and the picots can be worked in knitting if crochet is not an option.

Length 18 inches with 12 inches round front of hood, knitted in vintage 3ply, with bands of lace pattern. Hood is knitted separately.

The lacy one is from late 1940s and is 18 inches in length and knitted in baby wool, modern 3ply should work well. Light, pretty and warm. Great for that special occasion. The on one the right is in a broad rib and comes from 1939 and knitted in a thicker wool giving a super winter weight cape measuring 31 inches.

This super pattern has instructions for nice warm cape with lined hood and mittens and bootees to match. To fit 1-6 months and 6-12 months, in two sizes. Knitted in vintage chubby wool which was a thick double knitting type of yarn. Try baby double knitting or baby aran in a tension square and see which works best. Bootees and mittens and lining of hood is in modern 4ply.

But if you would like a smaller size then try modern 3ply. Length 18 inches, but this is adjustable, if you make it any longer please allow for extra wool.
