The one with the baby is 48 inches square as is the top one on the cover. The other one is 45 inches square. All are knitted in vintage 3ply wool, so try modern 4ply in a tension square or if you would like a lighter shawl try modern 3ply but the finished shawl will be a bit smaller unless you change needles to get the same tension.

Bairnswear 1444: Lovely vintage pattern for 2 baby pram covers and sleeping bag from 1930s. This very useful pattern is for a simple to knit sleeping bag with zip and two pram or cot covers. The sleeping bag measures 38 inches to the fold and is 38 inches at the widest part. The two colour pram rug is 27 x 30 inches and the other one is 24 x 27 inches all are knitted in a type of thick double knitting, work a tension square.

Baby Shetland Isles Shawl: Pretty vintage shawl knitting pattern 1940s. This one is from a 'receipt' over a hundred years old. A Shetland Isle design with a Vandyke lace border. Measures approx 48 x 48 inches and is worked in vintage 2ply, so try modern 3ply in a tension square as well as modern 2ply, but I think you will find that modern 3ply is nearer the ply from the 40s. Worked in two parts the centre and then the border - not as hard as it looks this one.

Bestway 535: Great vintage baby shawl and blanket knitting pattern from late 1930s. There are two shawls and two pram blanket designs in this pattern. Here are the shawls they measure 29 inches square in vintage 3ply, so try modern 4ply and the plainer one is 48 inches square and knitted in vintage 2ply, so try modern 3ply, this one has a lace edging and a shallow crocheted edging, with the centre in plain garter stitch.

bestway 535 baby shawl knitting pattern 1930s

Bestway 535-1: Great vintage knitting pattern for 2 pram covers and two shawls. Here are the details of the blankets. The are both knitted in 4ply, so try modern double knitting in a tension square. The one at the bottom corner is double thickness, each side a different colour and small flower is embroidered in the centre of each diamond, with a nice firm moss stitch border, this one measures 37 by 25 inches. The one on the pram is in a fancy herringbone cable stitch, but easy to work, giving a good extra warmth. This one measure 33 inches by 25 inches.

Bestway 806: Great vintage baby blanket cover and shawl knitting pattern 1940s. There are instructions for a crochet cover in squares, a little pram blanket and a pretty shawl, also available separately, see below.  The crochet one can be made any size you like, but suggest a cot size one of 33 inches by 65 inches. The Pram rug is 36 inches by 26 inches and is so easy to knit in vintage 3ply, so try using modern 4ply. The shawl has a pretty diamond lacy pattern and measures 36 inches square and worked in vintage 3ply, so again try modern 4ply.

Bestway 1193: Great vintage knitting pattern baby shawls 1940s. There are instructions for two head or small shawls and a larger carrying shawls. Knitted in 3ply so try modern 4ply in a tension square, the head shawl also makes a nice pram or buggy cover. - both patterns are very easy. The head shawl on the cover measures 24" the other one is 30" square and the carrying shawl 46" square.

Bestway1194: Great vintage knitting pattern for shawl in 2 sizes from 1940s. This lovely Bestway pattern has cosy little head shawl in a block pattern and a diamond pattern full shawl, shown below. The instructions are for block head shawl 28 inches square and knitted in vintage 3ply and the diamond design shawl is 30square for the head shawl and 46 inches square for the carrying shawl. Always work a tension square.

Bottom corner measures 18"x 28", top corner measures 22" x28" and the crochet one, in centre of pattern measures 24" x 32".

This is a super pattern with instructions for a sweet little hot water bottle cover, cot cover with satin ribbon, shawl, sleeping bag and bootees and mittens- great little gifts for new born baby, also instructions for toy ball and rattle! Shawl and bootees and mitts are in vintage 3ply and measures43 square inches, all other are knitted in what was termed thicker wool - before double knitting was common. Work tension square on needle size stated and change if needed with modern double knitting yarn. These items would be great for that retro feel at a Christmas Bazaar.

Golden Eagle 983: Great vintage knitting pattern for baby blanket in blanket wool. Looking at the needle size probably a very chunky yarn - tension is 3 stitches to an inch on imperial no2, (metric 7mm.) The pattern recommends 34 oz which is roughly 21 x 50g balls of thick chunky wool. The measurements are 33" x 48" for the cot size and 30" x 25 " for the pram using 16oz (10 x 50g balls). Keep baby warm this winter choose a machine washable wool. Always work a tension square.

Golden Eagle 1007: Great vintage baby shawl knitting pattern 1940s. This is super retro knitting pattern for a delicate, but easy to knit shawl  worked in vintage 3ply so try modern 4ply in a tension square - for a slightly smaller, more delicate version use modern 3ply. Knitted on large needles old size 7 (4.50mm) so will knit up quickly despite its size, 60 x 60 inches, take about 16oz (500g) wash by hand (unless using modern yarn that can be machine washed- Patons baby merino 3 and 4ply is machine washable) and dry flat, press carefully after finishing.

It says it will need to be stretched after completion, this can be done by laying it out slightly damp on a white sheet and pinning the edges, especially the points out and leaving to dry - not in the sun! well worth the effort this one 66 inches.
