afternoon set or matinees dress set for baby from 1940 Leonie Afternoon Set: Great vintage knitting pattern for baby dress set from 1940s. This Afternoon Set comprises of a pretty dress with collar to fit 21 inch chest, a matinee with collar and a bonnet knitted in baby 3ply. These little sets were called Afternoon Sets because babies usually wore night dresses for most of the morning, but were changed for an afternoon stroll out in their prams. This one is worked in a pretty leaf pattern. Dress measures 16 inches in length. Try a smaller size needle for a smaller size. Always work a tension square.

vintage baby layette carry coat from 1940s knitting pattern Leonie Layette: Carry Coat and Bonnet Set: Great vintage knitting pattern for layette. Illustrated here are the carry coat and bonnet set belonging to the layette above. They can be purchased separately or as part of the set. the carry coat, so called because is was longer than a matinee coat which was more commonly worn indoors, was used when outside, in a pram or being carried in place of a shawl. These little mittens have thumbs, but can be knitted without if wished, bootees are included although not shown. Coat to fit 20 inch chest .There is also a shawl on the shawl page to complete the set

This set is to compliment the Leonie Layette, but is offered separately. The petticoat fits 18 inch chest, the vest 16 inch chest. The knickers or pilch is to be worn over a napkin (diaper) all knitted in a 3ply wool. The petticoat could be worn as a summer dress.

The little dress has a collar and puff sleeves with chevron design. To fit chest 19 inch chest. The matinee coat fits 21 inch chest to give room for under clothes. Leonie Carry Coat 2: Great vintage knitting pattern for delicate carry coat from 1940s. This fairy-like coat would look lovely over a christening dress or party frock. Knitted in fine 2ply in an easy four row lace pattern. With delicate puff sleeves and ribboned yoke is so pretty, measuring 17.5 inches long. Although fine and dainty the needles are not too fine (10 and 8)

Lisa Day Set: Great vintage knitting pattern for baby matinee set. These little sets were often called day sets or afternoon sets as they were worn by baby for going visiting, a flannel night dress was usually worn for the first part of the day after a bath. This one is from late 1940s showing the fashion change in style of dress ans shorter jacket, there are little bootees to match. The little buttons at the sleeve joins still retains the 1940s essence.

This beautiful dress, matinee,  bonnet, bootees and mittens set is knitted in vintage 3ply wool that would be similar to modern 3ply, always work a tension square. No size given for this one but look like it might be about 18 inch chest. Work a tension square and see how many stitches to the inch then you will be able to see the finished size. The shawl pictured below matches this set and measures 55 inches square. Instruction how to make a larger or smaller size included.

This pattern is from the USA, a needle conversion chart is provided. Where it says bind off, read cast off. Gauge means tension. Blocking is where you pin out the finished garment to check size before you press. Pretty with embroidery. Knitted in baby wool, 3ply. Always work a tension square. Worked in stocking stitch with crochet edges in contrast. Very easy to kit this one.
