Amee Dress Set-1: Great vintage baby dress set from 1940s. This super set has instructions for  pretty dress, jacket with waist tie, bonnet with lightly frilled front and bootees. Knitted in 3ply baby wool to fit 17 inch chest, dress length is adjustable but suggested at 16 inches.

This lovely dress in knitted in rayon or art silk, but could be knitted in modern silk or a cotton, light weight yarn to knit to a 4ply tension. To fit 6 months to a year. Easy smocked panels at yoke ( rib that is nipped together by a stitch  after completion - so easy and very effective). Back and front are alike and fastened at the shoulders.

There are also instructions for gored skirted dress with a collar and small double buttoned placket as well as one with circular yoke and easily smocked decoration, this one is knitted from the yoke down in one piece.

This one is to fit a baby one year old 20-22 inch chest and is worked in an art silk (rayon) and wool blend that gives 11 trebles to an inch. Always work a tension square and change hook if needed. Five small buttons at back fasten the dress. Colours suggested are white, peach, primrose of the pretty green as illustrated.

From 1 month -12 months for 18" chest to 22" chest and length, which can be altered easily is 14" or 16". They are all knitted in vintage 3ply which knits similar to our modern 4ply. If you want a smaller size use modern 3ply, I knitted my niece a 1st size dress making it 12" long in modern 3ply on 10 and 11 needles and it was just right, the 3rd one down on the left.

Here is a gorgeous layette from the 1930's and this pattern is for sale, not just a photocopy (although you can have lovely photocopy for £2.99!) This pattern has a stunning shawl, easy pattern, cute little retro bonnet and dress with underwear and bootees to match including a sweet little hug-me-tight, all knitted in vintage 3ply pure wool or try modern 4ply (work tension square). The shawl takes 13 oz or 7 x 50gm balls modern 4ply, the dress and bonnet 2x 50gm balls of modern 4ply (makes them a little smaller, therefore more suitable for newborns - have ago is easier than it looks!

Bairnswear73: Delightful vintage knitting pattern for baby dresses from the 1930's.  These dear little dresses are knitted in vintage 2ply and 3ply - don’t panic this is the same as modern 3ply and 4ply. Pattern suggest knitting on size 9  (3.75mm) so if you would like it a bit smaller just knit on size 10 (3.25mm) Try a tension square to see if you need to change needles and adjust length for the child you are knitting for. Chest measurements 23" but easily can be made smaller by using modern 2ply or 3ply on smaller needles and adjusting skirt length. Pattern states 1-2 years, but all toddlers are different.

So sweet as can be seen, I have made the one on right in white cashmere, stunning results. To fit babies 6-18 months, approx 19 and 20 inch chest. The one with the collar is knitted in foxglove stitch - so pretty. The plain little knickers will go with either dress. Knitted in vintage 3ply so work a tension square modern 3ply and 4ply to see which result you like the better, the 3ply will come a tad smaller.

The top of the dress is rib so will fit a smaller size neatly, this is so pretty and easy to knit, the dress is 16 inches long, but can be made shorter or longer (if longer remember to allow mere wool) there are also instructions for the rib vest and piltch (nappy cover- diaper cover). This style reflects the dresses of older sister and mother with the A line and flare at the bottom - so sweet!

It is easy to knit and has blackberry stitch top and chevron lace design skirt, the sleeves are set in. The length is 14 inches and the chest up to 20 inches. The little ribbons set it off and of course would have been silk!

There is a picot edge worked in crochet round collar edge, sleeves and hem, but you can work a knitted picot edge if you don’t crochet.

Worked in stocking stitch with fancy moss stitch bands and beautiful puff sleeves this gorgeously shaped dress is just the thing for those weekend re-enactment gatherings. To fit up to 24 inch chest and measures 15.5 inches long.

This lovely pattern has instructions for this easy to knit dress and simple, button at neck cardigan. Knitted in vintage 3ply, so try modern 4ply. Knitted with moss stitch yoke and embroidered panel. The skirt is made of panels of moss and stocking stitch, forming box pleats. The jacket is embroidered round the border and buttons at the neck. Should fit up to a 23 inch chest. From 1-2 years. Bestway A2653: Great vintage baby dress, bonnet and jacket knitting pattern from 1940s. This late 1940s baby set is knitted in vintage 2ply, so try modern 3ply in a tension square. Knitted in simple garter stitch with panels of simple embroidery to set it off, sleeves and neck have easy crochet edging. It says on the front 'specially designed for the beginner at knitting or while watching television' as only well off people had televisions at that time it makes you wonder if there were many ready made baby clothes available just after the war! Both wool and clothing was rationed until late 1949.

This one is for 16 inch length and 22 inch chest. This is a pretty pattern and easy to knit, great for the toddler.

Ribbons makes this very delicate and pretty. Length is stated at 16 inches but not chest measurement as the style give freedom of sizing. Mostly worked in vintage 3ply, so try modern 4ply in a tension square a lustre type of yarn is good for this one, giving it a silky look. Will probably fit 18-20 inch chest. Nice easy design. The one on the right is is easy to make longer or shorter, but states 14 inches, and will probably fit 18-20 inch chest. Nice easy ridge pattern, plain but very typical of the decades around the Wars.

Very sweet with the little buttons at the shoulders. The one on the right is in a thicker wool that would probably similar to modern double knitting.

This little dress is knitted in modern 4ply, always work a tension square, to fit 20 inch chest and is 16 inches long. The lace panel is so pretty and although this pattern was in a 1940s booklet I have 1930s pattern with the exact same pattern in so it is older than you think. To fit 6-12 months. These pretty dress look so beautiful on modern babies, this on could be lengthened ad used as Christening robe, but allow extra wool for this option.

Worked in vintage 3ply, if knitted in modern 3ply the set will be a bit smaller if knitted in modern 4ply with a size smaller needles it should be the size stated.

This little set is simple with little bobbles worked next to the V design. There are instructions for a simple pair of button and strap shoes to match with bobble stitch decoration, bonnet, bootees also included. To fit 18 inch chest or up to 6 months. Dress measures 12 inches, but this could be lengthen if needed. This was similar to a shortening set from the previous decade and set the style for the next decade, 1950s, partially brought about by shortage of wool. Worked in vintage 3ply, if knitted in modern 3ply the set will be a bit smaller if knitted in modern 4ply with a size smaller needles it should be the size stated.

Dress 1, with collar on baby is 14 inch length and 22 inch chest, no2 the one with lace bands in an A line, is to fit 21 inch chest and is 14 inches long. No3 is the one with tie at waist  and neck to fit 21 inch chest and 14 inch length, and the last one with collar and embroidered flowers is to fit 21 inch chest and is 13 inch in length. All length is adjustable and if knitted in modern 3ply they will come up smaller.
