vintage wartime services knitting patterns

                                               WARTIME KNITTING FOR THE SERVICES:

On these pages there are many wartime service knitting patterns 1940s for all a man away in the services could need - woman knitted not only for their own men folk but for others who had no relatives. Even young girls at school knitted mittens, helmets, socks and scarves for sailors, airman and soldiers.

This one is called Service Woollies for Air, Land and Sea. But there are over 300 other patterns in this section for Men and women (see Ladies Services page) Garments call for double knitting, vintage 4ply, and vintage 3ply - something for everybody. Just what a group that does displays or re-enactment needs.

There are patterns on these pages for waistcoats, cardigans, different scarves, mitts, fingerless mitts, gloves, hospital stockings, with and without feet, knee cap cosies, body belts, bed socks, Naval sea boot socks, helmets with cape pieces, ribbed balaclava, hospital balaclavas for head injuries, sports cap, sleeping cap, operation jacket with ties, foot injury boot and don't forget the cholera belt!

Great little gems to knit, great set pieces for ladies in display groups to be knitting in the air-force blue, khaki green, navy blue, grey or black. All female members would be sitting knitting for the war effort, when ever they had time to spare from family knitting. Many knitted for orphans and destitute families that had been bombed out or lost members of their family in battle. There were special depots to send the knitted garments to for distribution to the forces or hospitals in the UK and overseas.
