Bairnswear 1444: Lovely vintage pattern for 2 baby pram covers and sleeping bag from 1930s. This very useful pattern is for a simple to knit sleeping bag with zip and two pram or cot covers. The sleeping bag measures 38 inches to the fold and is 38 inches at the widest part. The two colour pram rug is 27 x 30 inches and the other one is 24 x 27 inches all are knitted in a type of thick double knitting, work a tension square.

Bestway 535: Great vintage baby shawl and blanket knitting pattern from late 1930s. There are two shawls and two pram blanket designs in this pattern. Here are the shawls they measure 29 inches square in vintage 3ply, so try modern 4ply and the plainer one is 48 inches square and knitted in vintage 2ply, so try modern 3ply, this one has a lace edging and a shallow crocheted edging, with the centre in plain garter stitch. Included are the two blanket detailed below.

Bestway 535-1: Great vintage knitting pattern for 2 pram covers and two shawls. Here are the details of the blankets. The are both knitted in 4ply, so try modern double knitting in a tension square. The one at the bottom corner is double thickness, each side a different colour and small flower is embroidered in the centre of each diamond, with a nice firm moss stitch border, this one measures 37 by 25 inches. The one on the pram is in a fancy herringbone cable stitch, but easy to work, giving a good extra warmth. This one measure 33 inches by 25 inches.

Bestway 806: Great vintage baby blanket cover and shawl knitting pattern 1940s. There are instructions for a crochet cover in squares, a little pram blanket and a pretty shawl, also available separately, see below.  The crochet one can be made any size you like, but suggest a cot size one of 33 inches by 65 inches. The Pram rug is 36 inches by 26 inches and is so easy to knit in vintage 3ply, so try using modern 4ply. The shawl has a pretty diamond lacy pattern and measures 36 inches square and worked in vintage 3ply, so again try modern 4ply.

This pattern is knitted in vintage 2ply, try tension square in modern 3ply first to see if you need different size needles or thicker yarn to work to measurements given. Shawl and bootees and mitts are in vintage 3ply and measures43 square inches, all other are knitted in what was termed thicker wool - before double knitting was common. Golden Eagle 1007: Great vintage baby shawl knitting pattern 1940s. This is super retro knitting pattern for a delicate, but easy to knit shawl  worked in vintage 3ply so try modern 4ply in a tension square - for a slightly smaller, more delicate version use modern 3ply. Knitted on large needles old size 7 (4.50mm) so will knit up quickly despite its size, 60 x 60 inches, take about 16oz (500g) wash by hand (unless using modern yarn that can be machine washed- Patons baby merino 3 and 4ply is machine washable) and dry flat, press carefully after finishing.

It says it will need to be stretched after completion, this can be done by laying it out slightly damp on a white sheet and pinning the edges, especially the points out and leaving to dry - not in the sun! well worth the effort this one 66 inches.

H&O S106: Very Pretty vintage baby shawl knitting pattern 1940s. This one was produced by quite a few pattern suppliers over the years, really traditional Shetland style. The finished shawl measures 60 inches square.  It takes 8oz (250g approx) to knit and Shetland lace weight is suggested, if you cannot get this, try modern 2ply in a tension square and change needles to get the required tension. It is knitted on large needles for the ply to create the light airy softness of this beautiful shawl. Don’t forget to block this one carefully to flatten out the peaks at the edges. Always work a tension square and change needles if needed.

This super pattern has instructions for a snug pram rug 26.5 by 19.25 inches, a bonnet set with bootees and mittens and a shawl that measures 36 by39 inches. The wool used for this set is a 2ply quicker knit that would have been similar to modern double knitting. There is no tension given, but if you work a square you will see how many stitches you need to make the size stated.

Shetland Isles Shawl: Pretty vintage shawl knitting pattern 1940s. This one is from a 'receipt' over a hundred years old. A Shetland Isle design with a Vandyke lace border. Measures approx 48 x 48 inches and is worked in vintage 2ply, so try modern 3ply in a tension square as well as modern 2ply, but I think you will find that modern 3ply is nearer the ply from the 40s. Worked in two parts the centre and then the border - not as hard as it looks this one.

Spider181: Great vintage baby shawl knitting pattern 1940s. Two great designs, the other one is below. This one is knitted in vintage 3ply, so modern 4 ply will work better, but do work a tension square to make sure, it measures 64 inches square and is really beautiful -takes 13oz (about 400g) Don't forget to pin out the points when blocking this shawl. The other one below is 62 inches square and a bit simpler in design, but take the same amount of wool.

Templeton 928: Great vintage cot blanket hot water bottle cover 1940s. This is a lovely gift set for a winter baby - a lovely retro style blanket and dinky hot water bottle cover. The cover can be either cot or pram and measures 40x24 inches, make shorter for modern prams or cribs. The hot water bottle cover measures 10x9 inches. Both are knitted in double knitting wool - colour suggested are blue and white - but this can be your choice of course.

Weldons 59-1:Great vintage shawl knitting pattern 1920s This lovely shawl is knitted in sections, three make a useful half shawl or six make a hexagonal shawl  - each section measures 36.5 inches along the straight edge and 36 inches along each slant, so this a lovely large shawl with an easy to knit lacy border. It was originally knitted in baby wool of a ply similar to modern 4ply with Art Silk which was a type of silky rayon. There are no tension instructions in this pattern. All measurements are approx.

Vintage 2ply is used, but modern 3ply might work better - knitted on vintage size 3 needles (6.5mm) and measures 70 inches square. This one needs careful blocking and hand washing after use - always re-block after washing to keep shape. Looking for a challenge then this is fun. Weldons 59-12: Great vintage shawl knitting pattern 1920s. This one is great for the less experienced knitter or a first large project as it is very easy to knit. It is knitted in vintage 3ply so try modern 4ply and on size 8 (4mm) long needles there are  341 stitches, but no shaping or intricate patterns. It measures approx 54 inches square. Weldons A777: Great vintage layette with baby dress knitting pattern from 1940s. This little set is super and suitable for a Christening. The dress can be made longer and there are instructions for the coat and the shawl. To fit birth to 9 months. Dress 22 inch chest, length 16 inches or the longer version as long as you like - but don't forget to allow extra wool. SHAWL measures 44 inches square, the little head shawl 22 inches square. Dress buttons at shoulders with little pearl buttons.

Weldons A934: Great vintage pram cover knitting pattern 1940s. There is a lovely selection here, two in 3ply (modern 4ply) and 2 in double knitting, as always with vintage patterns it is essential to work a tension square. Top right is a loop stitch cover in vintage 3ply and measures 24x30 inches, top left block pattern in DK and measures 27x30.5 inches. Lower left flower patterned in two colours in vintage 3ply is 20x28 inches, the lower right is crochet in two sizes worked in DK and measures 16.5x22 or 24.5x35 inches.

Weldons A1125: Lovely vintage baby shawl knitting pattern 1940s. Pattern includes matinee coat patten knitted in double knitting, birth to 9 months. Shawl measures 48" square, again a nice easy pattern with lacy edging - the edging is knitted on 12 stitches with a 12 row pattern, the main part has 181 stitches and a 6 row pattern - what could be easier?

Super fringed SHAWL that measures 40 inches square and is knitted in sections. Dress and jacket in pretty feather and fan design, dress has buttons on shoulders. To fit 18 inch chest. Try modern 4ply for this size but if you would like a smaller low birth size use modern 3ply. There are also a pair of little bootees.

The cape is 21 inches long and 12" around the brim. Both are knitted in vintage 3ply so try tension square and see if you need to change yarn or needle size. This pattern is from the 1940's.
