Good Housekeeping Forces Knitting Bookw2: Great book with lots of items to knit for the men in conflict 1940s. There are instructions for over 14 items with good instructions and interesting notes.  A tension guide, abbreviations and how to knit the continental way is included in this book.  34 pages, small format (as a photocopy there are back and front colour pages and a larger format is used for easier use) Most of the patterns are available seperately, see below. Plus here are seaboot socks, knee warmers, gloves, fingerless mittens and interesting adverts.

The slipover can be worked with or with out sleeves and in vintage 3ply, so try modern 4ply in a tension square to fit 32-34 and 34-36. The waistcoat is to fit 34-36 and knitted in 4ply, so try modern double knitting. All other garments to fit average woman. A must of the re- enactment weekends or stage.

Vogue 102w2: Great vintage knitting pattern for polo neck sweater 1940s. This pattern also has instructions for a pair ribbed socks. Sweater to fit 38 inch chest, neck of sweater and the socks are knitted in 4 needles. Vintage 4ply is suggested so try modern doubel knit in a tension square, you might find that modern 4ply will work looking at the needle size. But to be weather proof these jumpers and socks were knitted quite tightly.

Weldons 14-14w2: VAD Ward Comforts: Great vintage knitting pattern for hospital comforts 1940s style. This is from the above book that was issued in the early 1940s to help wounded service people as well as those injured in bombing raids all over Britain. The stone hot water bottle was still in use as the cover here shows and the simple spiral bed socks was a common pattern and easy for volunteers to knit. Dont forget if doing re-enactment scenes most people would be knitting this type of thing or socks and scarfs, mittens or knee warmers for the services in their down time. Men, women and children would be knitting!

There are instructions for 4 pairs of socks, seaboot socks, over-socks, service short socks and upto the knee socks all to fit about 10-11.5 inch foot, but all adjustable. The sea boot socks (great for sailors and fishermen) are knitted in oiled double knitting or aran yarn. The others are knitted in vintage 4ply. Always work a tension square. There is a note to remind knitters to safety pin the two socks together when they send them to the receiving depots to keep them together!
