Anlaby 411: Great vintage ladies swim suit knitting pattern from 1930s. This one is called Palm Beach and is knitted in vintage 3ply, so try modern 4ply in  a tension square. To fit 32-34 inch bust. Knitted in pure wool this will be stretchy. Always work a tension square.

There are no sizes mentioned in these patterns as was often the case early in the 20th Century, so probably medium 34" bust work tension square on the size needles given and similar yarn, which was an artificial silk that knitted to a firm fabric on size 12 needles - it was a medium weight no 5 it says in the pattern. This may need some experimenting with, but is very easy to knit, despite the fact that they are knitted on 5 needles in the round, to make them seamless.

To fit 33-35 inch bust. Skirt waist 23-26 inches and is elasticated. Knitted in a 4ply, always work a tension square.

Copley 2019sw: Fabulous vintage knitting pattern for sun tops from the late 1930's, just the thing for the beach in 2010. Instructions for three different tops all knitted in vintage 3ply, try tension square in modern 4ply and see if a change of needles is needed - tension has to be tighter if you wish to go in the water with these tops - also use modern synthetic yarn to minimize, soggy top syndrome and stretching or shrinking! Great for just laying around on the beach or on the deck of that expensive yacht.

Daily Herald 11sw: Great vintage knitting pattern for FAIR ISLE bikini 1940s Super pattern, so pretty, with chart and instructions, in light and dark shades, would look stunning in red and white or green and yellow. To fit bust 34-35" bust and 35-37" hips. Try tension square in modern 4ply, also try a larger size needle for that extra inch to make a 36" bust and 38" hip.

Daily Mail Swim suit: Fabulous vintage knitting pattern from 1920s. Knitted in 2ply crochet yarn (try modern 3ply cotton or 20 cotton) always work a tension square. A circular knitting needle is used to get a seamless garment, but can be worked on a set double pointed needles if needed. The straps at the back are linked through wooden rings. The original pattern suggest white with brown trim, to match the wood. But you can use any colour you like. To fit a 34" bust. There are instructions for make larger sizes. It is simple, just work out how many stitches you knit to an inch with your chosen yarn and needles and add that amount of stitches for every extra inch you need. Very simple instructions.

There are instructions for the nicely fitting shorts and bra top that is so easy to knit. shorts to fit 30 inch hips stretching to 34 inches. This little outfit is called a sea-sun suit. The top will fit a 28 inch chest. Knitted in 4ply but to a tight tension to allow for fitting once wet.

This design is knitted in a 4ply knitted firmly and should fit 32 inch bust and hips 34-36. Although this beautiful bikini was originally knitted in an elastic enriched yarn - long before elastane was ever thought of- it should knit up well in a modern 4ply, remember to knit firmly and always work a tension square. Natural for main colour, dark green, light green, red, light blue and black are colour suggested and would look well as authentic colours from that era.

Greenock 342sw: Great 1940s two-piece swim suit with a belt. Mother had one of these and said she used to use a tie instead of the belt. Knitted in in Bathing Costume Wool which was about 4ply, but non-shrink, non-stretch, so try a modern synthetic yarn. To fit 34" bust and 26" waist.

The child one is to fit 8-10 years old or chest 26 inches. Knitted in vintage 4ply. Make sure fabric is firm when you work the tension square. Change needles or yarn to get desired tension. Very easy to knit in double moss stitch. The ladies is a bra top and shorts are knitted in vintage 3ply so try modern 4ply in a tension square, the small size needles will help to create a firm fabric. To fit 32-36 inch bust and 36-40 inch hips, in a fancy rib. Bra top is well shaped.

Knitted in what was called 'Holiday', from the needle size I would imagine it was similar to our modern 4ply, work tension square and see if a needle change is needed, remember o keep the fabric tight to avoid 'soggy bottom syndrome' Great talking point on the beach - the outfit hopefully not the soggy bottom part! To fit 36" bust. Again this out fit will be great for lounging around the beach or the deck of a cruise ship - just think of Agatha Christie novel and hope your trip will be a bit less eventful! Worked in vintage 3ply, so try modern 4ply in a tension square and change needles if needed. To fit Bust34", waist 27" and hips 36" - all these measurements are adjustable, just increase needle size or yarn thickness or once you have worked out the tension and you know how many stitches you knit to the inch, you can add or subtract this amount to get the correct size.

So follow instructions carefully - it says wet wool expands so make sure that the swimming suit fits really firmly. Keep the fabric firm as you knit. To fit 30-32 inch bust. Add stitches rather than increase the ply or needle size for a little larger size. Original was worked in green with yellow contrast. This stunning outfit is knitted in a vintage wool that will be similar to a modern 4ply wool. Always work a tension square. To fit 32-34 inch bust. Wool stretches in wear so make sure this is a snug fit and the fabric is firmly knitted to prevent 'soggy bottom syndrome' when wet. The suite has reasonably low back with straps, the cape buttons on to the suit. Has nice pictures of other swim suits that were available at the time.

The shorts fir 38" hips, again easy to alter. Knitted in vintage 3ply so try modern 4ply to gain size required or use thinner ply or thicker ply to change size.

R282sw: Great vintage ladies swim suit knitting pattern from early 1930s. My grandmother actually wore the one she made from this pattern in 1932 when on holiday in Broadstairs! Made in white with scarlet trim, but you can use any colour combination you wish. Notice the longer body covering the gusset. See below for the back view. To fit  32-34 inch bust and knitted in a 4ply that knits 8 stitches to an inch on size 12 needles. You need a firm fabric for swim suits so often they are knitted on smaller needles than usual for the ply. Here is the back view of the swim suit above, with cross scarlet bands and neatly cover seat!

Great styling for this retro suit knitted in scarlet and white for impact, super design. Worked in vintage 3ply, so try modern 4ply in a tension square. Tension for this one is 7.5 stitches to an inch on size 10, so more like a modern 4ply would knit. To fit 33-34 inch bust. Nice low back and slimming lines. I love this one.

Weldons 591sw: Lovely vintage knitting pattern from 1940s for easy to knit two piece swim suit. Again this one is conscious of the austerity measures, so is flattering, but simple in style. Fits beautifully. Trunks stretching to 36" Top, stretching to 32"-33" These measurements can be adjusted my using larger needles size to adding a few more stitches.

Weldon 646-2: Great vintage ladies swim suit with stripe top 1933. This is a super pattern for a very smart swim suit with cross over straps at back and asymmetric top, billed as 'the newest sea suit'  measurements - round hips unstretched is 28, so will probably go up to a 32-34 hip no bust measurement given, but probably 32 inches - always work a tension square and change needles to get the size required worked in vintage 4ply, so try in modern double knitting. Tension for this pattern is 7.5 stitches and 9.5 rows to an inch.

Weldon 646-3: Great vintage swim suit for young lady 1933. Instructions to make this charming  half and half effect suit, to fit shoulder to lower edge 28 inches no bust measurement given. The fabric should be stretchy so will fit probably 32-34 inch bust, but always work a tension square and see how many stitches to an inch you knit in the yarn that you choose - you should be about to work out the size from this. Worked in vintage 4ply, try modern 4ply tension should be 7 stitches and 10 rows to one inch on size 10 (3.25mm).

WKB82Lsw: Great vintage wartime knitting pattern for beach set for Mum or older sister and a little girl. Ladies is to fit 36 inch bust and knitted in vintage 3ply, so try modern 4ply as you will need a firm fabric so as not to fall victim to the 'soggy bottom syndrome' there is no chart for the fair isle diamonds, just written directions. Child's sun suit is top fit 24 inches at the widest part. Back and front alike, so easy to knit this one and a chart for embroidery if required. Very smart, very retro!
