Ladies vintage swimwear knitting patterns

Bestway 93-1: Vintage booklet with lots of designs for the summer sun - when we get it! Maybe they had more in the 1940's and 50's. The first one is of the bra-top and shorts featured on the cover, knitted in 4ply bust 32"-34" and hips 36"-38"  (how slim ladies were in the 'good ole days' !)

Knitted in vintage 3ply, so try modern 4ply, the fabric needs to be firm to keep its shape in the water, change needles if needed. The design was worked in blue and white. Easy to knit. To fit bust 33"-34" and hips 37"-38"

Bestway 2020: Great vintage two piece bathing suit from the 1940's worked in vintage 4ply, so modern double knitting might work better, try a tension square and see if this would work better. Bust 32"-34" the fabric is a bit stretchy when knitted.

1940s Wartime knitted Ladies Swimwear pattern

Bestway 2021sw: Fabulous 1940's two piece swim suit to fit 34-36 inch bust knitted in vintage 3ply, so try modern 4ply in a tension square. Try to use a non-elastic yarn if possible with silk or cotton in to stabilize it. Or don't go in the water wearing the bikini or you might just come out of the water NOT wearing it! But great for laying around and looking very stylish and retro - old movie star fashion!

Wartime 1940s Ladies beachwear knitting pattern

Bestway 2022sw: Great 1940's vintage knitting pattern for two piece swim suit worked in vintage 3ply, so try modern 4ply in a tension square. Knitted in single rib with strips of stocking stitch for straps and seams, there is a bow on the top (can be omitted) This is a fine example of austerity wear in the war years, pretty and with just a touch of glamour, but so practical. To fit 34" bust 36"-38" hips.

Copley 2019: Fabulous vintage knitting pattern for sun tops from the late 1930's, just the thing for the beach in 2013. Instructions for three different tops all knitted in vintage 3ply, try tension square in modern 4ply and see if a change of needles is needed - tension has to be tighter if you wish to go in the water with these tops - also use modern synthetic yarn to minimize "soggy top syndrome" and stretching or shrinking! Great for just laying around on the beach or on the deck of that expensive yacht.

Daily Herald 11sw: Great vintage knitting pattern for FAIR ISLE bikini. 1940s. Super pattern, so pretty, with chart and instructions, in light and dark shades, would look stunning in red and white or green and yellow. To fit bust 34-35" bust and 35-37" hips. Wartime Swim Suit 1940s knitting pattern

Greenock 342sw: Great 1940s two-piece swim suit with a belt. Mother had one of these and said she used to use a tie instead of the belt. Knitted in Bathing Costume Wool which was about 4ply, but non-shrink, non-stretch, so try a modern synthetic yarn. To fit 34" bust and 26" waist.

Ladyship 662sw: Another fabulous vintage knitted swim suit pattern from 1929. This one is for ladies, top, trunks and coatee. Knitted in what was called 'Holiday', from the needle size I would imagine it was similar to our modern 4ply, work tension square and see if a needle change is needed, remember to keep the fabric tight to avoid 'soggy bottom syndrome' Great talking point on the beach - the outfit, hopefully not the soggy bottom part! To fit 36" bust. Again this outfit will be great for lounging around the beach or the deck of a cruise ship - just think of Agatha Christie novel and hope your trip will be a bit less eventful! Have fun!

Miladi 247sw: Fabulous vintage knitting patten for swim suit from 1930s for young lady. To fit 32"-34" bust with cross over strap back. with simple diamond rib centre panel to give style and fit, would also make nice cami-knicks in the winter! Use tension square to work out which needles and yarn to make garment to fit. Probably used vintage 3ply, so try any modern 4ply non elastic yarn to avoid soggy bottom syndrome if you dare to go in the water in this one!

Modern Knitting Seaside and Beachwear 147-1sw: Fabulous vintage knitting pattern for a beach outfit from the 1940s consisting of bra top, shorts and bolero jacket. Worked in vintage 3ply, so try modern 4ply in a tension square and change needles if needed. To fit Bust34", waist 27" and hips 36" - all these measurements are adjustable, just increase needle size or yarn thickness or once you have worked out the tension and you know how many stitches you knit to the inch, you can add or subtract this amount to get the correct size.

1940s Ladies Sun Top, Briefs and Bolero knitting pattern

Patons 273sw: Great vintage knitting pattern form the late 1940s for a bikini and bolero knitted in vintage 3ply, so try a tension square with modern 4ply. This set consists of sun top, briefs (shorts) and bolero. To fit 34-35" bust and 36-37" hips. Garment must fit tightly if to be warn in the water as it may sag when wet (soggy bottom syndrome!) So knit on smaller needles than the yarn would usually be knitted on to create a tight fabric. Colours suggested are Royal blue, white with red embroidered bubbles.

Patons 337-2:Vintage knitting pattern for very fashionable swim suit from the early 1920's. Again this on is rather a small bust 29"-31", but try large needles or thicker yarn. Experiment, it will be worth it! Knitted in vintage 3ply so try modern 4ply. Look at patterns in larger sizes to see how stitch counts vary - use this as a guide to knitting a larger garment. Remember to keep fabric tight to allow garment to keep shape when wet.

Sirdar 1125sw:Great vintage knitting pattern for ladies swim suit from the 1940's. This sun suit had a bra and shorts. The bra fits bust 34" but is simple to knit and easy to enlarge. The shorts fir 38" hips, again easy to alter. Knitted in vintage 3ply so try modern 4ply to gain size required or use thinner ply or thicker ply to change size.

Stitchcraft 10sw: Another fabulous 1940's bathing suit knitting pattern. To fit 32"-34"  knitted in vintage 3ply so try modern 4ply, knitted in a delightful zig-zag pattern. If you wish to use pure wool for that authentic look and feel, use a none shrink, machine washable brand to avoid the infamous 'soggy bottom syndrome' It has buttons at the back. Work tension square always with vintage patterns and change needles or yarn as needed.

vintage stitchcraft knitting pattern 1937

SS37-6-34sw:Great vintage knitting swimsuit knitting pattern 1937. This is a lovely pattern for a simple, but very retro swim suit and a little sun suit for laddie. The ladies swim suit is to fit 32-34 inch bust, 36-38 inch hips. Worked in vintage 4ply so work a tension square in 4ply, but you might have to use double knitting. Keep knitting firm, the design gives a little leeway for size as it stretches a bit in wear. There is a skirt over the bottom part, which was typical of that era. The little child suit says length 14 inches but does not give chest, worked in vintage 3ply .

SS48-56sw: Fabulous fair isle knitting pattern for swim suit from 1948.To fit 32"-34" bust, knitted in 3 colours, but can be knitted in single colour, with contrast bands to great effect. Vintage 3ply is used, so try tension square in modern 4ply.

Weldons 591sw: Lovely vintage knitting pattern from 1940s for easy to knit two piece swim suit. Again this one is conscious of the austerity measures, so is flattering, but simple in style. Fits beautifully. Trunks stretching to 36" Top, stretching to 32"-33" These measurements can be adjusted my using larger needles size or adding a few more stitches.

Weldon 646-2: Great vintage ladies swim suit with stripe top 1933. This is a super pattern for a very smart swim suit with cross over straps at back and asymmetric top, billed as 'the newest sea suit'  measurements - round hips un-stretched is 28, so will probably go up to a 32-34 hip no bust measurement given, but probably 32 inches - always work a tension square and change needles to get the size required worked in vintage 4ply, so try in modern double knitting. Tension for this pattern is 7.5 stitches and 9.5 rows to an inch.

Weldon 646-3: Great vintage swim suit for young lady 1933. Instructions to make this charming  half and half effect suit, to fit shoulder to lower edge 28 inches no bust measurement given. The fabric should be stretchy so will fit probably 32-34 inch bust, but always work a tension square and see how many stitches to an inch you knit in the yarn that you choose - you should be about to work out the size from this. Worked in vintage 4ply, try modern 4ply tension should be 7 stitches and 10 rows to one inch on size 10 (3.25mm).
